1962 Independent Dual Exhaust Question

Postby MN-HD57XL » Thu Oct 24, 2019 2:26 pm

I’d appreciate some guidance/help assembling the pieces and parts to install a 1962 independent dual exhaust system on my ‘57 XL.

I realize this is sacrilege to many of you. I prefer the looks and especially the sound this setup will provide, and my original ‘57 parts will be carefully stored for possible future use.

My main question is regarding the rear exhaust pipe (part #65491-62). What is the difference in this part and part #65491-62B. Are they interchangeable?

Any leads on original used HD parts would be greatly appreciated. I prefer used over NOS, and a little “patina”/wear is perfectly suitable for my application.

Thanks in advance,

John

Just a word to the wise = If you do find NOS parts be shore to paint the inside of the pipes with high heat paint this will prevent bluing and yellowing. Run steel wool through them to clean them up then cleaner like brake clean or some equal solvent cleaner before painting them. Did all mine and worked perfect.

The -62B will fit ... I am not sure what the changes have been, but I maybe some additional clearance "dent" caused eventually by the electric start.

The parts manual usually helps:

The part manuals and supplements up to -66 list only the 65491-62, in the 67 parts manual, the 65491-62A appears -- and 67 was the year the electric leg was introduced. Intrestingly the supplement lists stil the 65491-62 for all XLH, XLCH until 1966 and the 65491-62A is listed for 1967 XLH and XLCH (although no e-start) -- so what else has been changed in 1967? In 1969 the supplement lists the 65491-62B for all sportsters and 65491-62 and 65491-62A are "replaced by 65491-62B". The 65491-62B has two dents on the backside. My assumption is, that the -62 had none, the -62A had on and the -62B two -- but that is just guessing around.

In 67 HD moved the brake switch to the right side of the swing arm for both the H and CH. Could that have created a clearance issue?

Just a guess. In 67 the XLH used the offset frame to accommodate the electric start and the large battery. In 1969 all models used the offset which might be why the book states for all models.

All Sportsters went to a common frame in 70. So what else changed?

I appreciate everyones thoughts. Very informative.

It appears the proper support tube (65316-62 and/or 65312-65) has the flattened area at the "front" rather than being round/tube-like through the whole length. Using this support tube is critical in getting the exhaust to mount properly.

Whatever parts I have now, are not working. The rear exhaust pipe (appears to be a genuine HD part) does not fit properly / interferes with kicker location.

I want to make certain I source the right parts going forward.

Until the 1967 XLH, all Sportsters were kickstart only. During 1967 and until 1969, Harley made two cases for the Sportster, one for the kick-start XLCH and one for electric-start XLH. Starting in 1970, all Sportster models shared the same engine cases. If you go to the gallery and look at the 66 thru 70 models you will see some changes. Then go to the OSKRG gallery below Barnsters and look at the OSKRG-Oley 2017, and look at the 76' XLH and you will see the exhaust system you have. If you have Google Chrome go to the control panel (3 dots, upper right) and after you open the larger size pic, you can zoom as big as you desire to get a better view. Hope this helps. You will notice the major change in the angle of the secondary pipe in the area of the kicker... Born in Duluth...Rufous...

that is exactly what I suspected was the case ... and greatly appreciate your confirmation and references. Thanks a ton.
