KH vs 1957 Sportster

Postby thefrenchowl » Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:00 am

Hi all,

Some years back I purchased a negative on eBay... It appealed to me cause of the nice composition which suggest a passing of the guard, KH to Sportster.

Did nought with it since I haven't got decent enough software to sort it.

But I recently send it to a friend in France, Bernard, who's quite handy at cleaning and restoring old photos for his articles and books.

The result was a 162Mbts picture which I reduced a lot to publish here.

Looking at the background, seating area, track and high fence, it looks very much like the Milwaukee Show Grounds before 1960 for sure.

The KH sports a small headlamp, no horn, KR tin cover and special heavy duty footrests.

The 57 Sportster is more std, but seems to have a tray underneath and the front exhaust has a dent to clear the guard. Pretty muddy underneath.

Both bikes have numbers on the headlights, but too small for proper racing, so I assume club entertainment at a race meeting...

Anyone could correct me or tell me more?

See ya, Patrick

Another glitch on this site, it won't let me attach the photo...

Since there's an XL, I also put it on the XLForum.

You're welcome to try and insert it!!!

Patrick,

You mention "57 Sportster is more std, but seems to have a tray underneath."

I recently looked at a pile of old Sportster parts and among them was what I would call a "skid plate." It's about 10" wide, maybe 22 to 24 inches long, has two 1.5" holes in it for drain plug access(?), is curved up in front and is painted a grayish olive drab which looks original. Attachment points match to a Sportster frame I have. My first thought was it might be something used with military versions of the Sportster. Thoughts?

Mark,

Take a look at this posting - could that be what it is?

Yes. That's the piece, the Enduro Skid plate, a K and KH competition accessory. But that small bolt-on attachment on the left side is missing.

The owner was a hillclimber, so kinda figures.

Thanks for digging out that page of literature.

Hi Mark,

If you still have access to that skidplate, I'm looking for one to buy - along with any other of the enduro parts he might have.

Cheers,

Simon
