XLCH Chain Oiler - Help!

Postby hennesse » Wed Jun 17, 2015 12:05 am

My 62 XLCH came with the chain oiler removed and the oil tank plugged. I've now got the oiler body and some hose, but I don't have the two hose brackets (Index #70 and 71).

Where do the two brackets mount?
Can anyone provide measurements of the brackets - especially the lower one?

Once I get the brackets figured out, I'll know where the hose goes...

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I have the short one, it mounts to the rear motor mount front right bolt to the case, the lower one I do not have but might be able to get it, top rear case bolt is where it mounts, same place as the XLH chain oiler. Need your address.

Yes, this page seems to show those same pictures and more, about 2/3 of the way down

It looks like the long one actually goes to the frame horn, if you can believe it. Short clip picks up a top motor mount.

Joe Streett sent me photos of a slightly different way of mounting.

Look above at Murph's first photo (above) - the hose is routed BEHIND the oil tank front mounting bracket

Now look at Joe's first photo (below) - the hose is routed in FRONT of the oil tank front mounting bracket

OK, now let's look at some photos from The Legend Begins

Below is the 1960 photo. The steep angle of the oiler and hose make it look like it's going BEHIND the bracket.

Below is the 1961 photo. The angle has changed to about 45 degrees. But the hose obviously goes BEHIND the bracket.

Below is the 1962 photo. The angle is back to the steep 1960 one. Hose goes BEHIND the bracket?

Below is the 1964 photo. Angle changed. Looks like the hose is now going IN FRONT OF the bracket

For 1963 and 1965, TLB shows the other side of the bike, so no joy there. Did something change in 1964 (or 1963?). One oddity in the 1964 photo - the horn condenser appears to be mounted on the toolbox stud in the crankcase. Well, the condenser seems to be a topic for another post - it seems that Harley wasn't too consistent about where they mounted that either.

Dave, I think mid 63 with the oil feed on bottom of tank instead of front probably changed the oiler line routing.

Hello all - just wondering if anyone has a couple of oil tank mounts they would like to sell. Parts 28 (x2) and 29? Cheers Hayley.
