1958 XL

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help me with looking at this bike? It has a title and it matches the engine. He found a number on the frame: 17512-51. Is that number correct? Is there anything that jumps out as "wrong?"

Hi, nice motorcycle! A few things stick out. It appears to be a pre 63 XLCH XL mix. A 58 XL should look like 57 XL or even a 56 KHK. Full Tins, Big Head Lamp, Large Fuel Tank, Long Rear Fender, 18" Rear Wheel, etc. It has Side Oil Tank like XL with frame tabs. Frame Date Code is on right side seat casting. Will be a number 8 with a letter. (Possibly a 7 depending on date made) 8C would mean made 1958 March. Codes are reversed for 60s, like A7 would be Jan 1967. Not Jan 1957. The cases should be natural. Other numbers are casting numbers for frame components. Very Nice looking, looks clean also. If it runs like it looks be a good ride. Happy New Year to all XL n K folks, Erik

Another note, the Headlight and such are later and hard to tell everything without detail shots but it appears to be very nice and well put together. If interested the best thing would be to ride it to see how it runs and how it shifts. If the frame is an uncut 58 XL it could be brought back to original if desired. I would ride it and search out the original parts than restore when they have been found. Even if you never get to restoring any original parts acquired are better than $ and would add to the value. If the frame is wrong save yourself a lot of time & $ and just ride it, do things here and there as you like.

I own a very original OP 1958 XLH. Every nut and bolt on this bike is as it left the factory. The paint has been touched up on the white part of the gas tank. There are pictures of it in the gallery section of this forum.

A couple of things look not to be 58 on the bike. Cam cover appears to be 69, kickstand is aftermarket, the front fender is later, the rib on the rails should go to the end. Check the rear fender for coil indent (there shouldnt be one), i dont think the solo is HD but would need better pictures to be sure, also, check the belly numbers.

Is this bike close to you so you can take additional pictures if need be?

Do you know what the buddy seat looks like? If so please post a picture (I am looking for a good one).

Thanks,
I'm resolved to be OK with it not being all '58 and perfect. It's not an XLC or XLCH but I need a rider. If it has all early parts on it and not repro stuff, that's OK. For my first (street) bike in a very long time, I could just ride it. It's listed for $6500. I've offered $5500. Surely it's worth that. Right?

Where are you located?

Also.... I'm not anywhere near it so I can't start it or ride it or look at it closer.

maybe they can take a video for you of around the bike and then start it up at the least...maybe a shot of it going down the driveway...looks clean,a bit of mismatch parts and in my opinion listed a little high for the non stock parts...but your not far off with your offer,id try 4000.maybe settle near 4500
