For Cadmium Barrel Plating I used Three J's Industries in Elk Grove Village, IL.

They did a great job with all my small hardware parts. Here is a link:

Gary:

Would you mind sharing how much it cost you? I'm in Chicago . . . but have been shipping my last two batches out to Aero Prop service in CO. They charge me by the pound; and it's been running me a couple of hundred with shipping. Not bad; but if there's a local source for the same or cheaper; I'd like to give it a try for the UL I'm working on now.

Thanks!

So can ya post a picture of what this company's cad looks like 1 or 2 months after ya get it back from them? Appears that the sorry gov doesn't allow hexavalent cad any more. Only trivalent. I asked lots of platers and they all shy away from the question. I asked a couple about the difference between the 2 and both acted like it was some kinda taboo..............I have NOS parts that have been stored in all kinds of conditions and even after 50+ years, still bright and shiny as the day it was plated. Most cad platers these days, the cad looks horrible when it comes out of the solution or starts turning dark about the time you have it installed on the bike,

All the fasteners, pegs, etc on this bike was done a few years ago by Aero Prop in Colorado, which has apparently changed their name:

The work was done fast and very well -- and I felt the price reasonable. It has not darkened and remains bright silver. The only staining is from my greasy mitts. I do not know what "type" of cad plating was used -- just that it my parts came back with an ISO cert number for the plating and a cert that they were baked after the plating (yippee -- most shops charge extra for baking).

I was planning to send a new batch in the autumn -- but I like supporting local business.

I wouldn't recommend Areo Propeller. I sent a batch to them that came back badly stained and most unevenly coated. I sent them back twice and they still came back looking the same. The plater Chris, said that the staining was because they no longer use deionized water in their process.

I've used these guys a number of times.

http://www.billmarkplating.com/plating.html

Not lately, but there's no reason to fear.

In fact, going to website just now, I'd say their services have expanded.

I have parts they've plated and after many years all is good.

Making a legible inventory of your parts that are not bulk / generic items works for both sides.

Also : If you want clean threads ( & etc. ) after plating, take the time and invest the elbow grease. Otherwise, the condition of the base metal after acid cleaning is what you'll get. lol

Well, that sucks. They did a great job when I sent them my last batch about two years ago.

I guess the hunt is truly on for a new cad plater . . .

Here's a site providing good info about various types of plating.

If interested / confused about similar-looking coatings, here you go.

I wouldn't go there if I was you. I bought a bike for a shop a block away from Billmark. I took a small pile of stuff over there to get clear cad. I explained to him about the parts turning gray and getting black streaks and the owner assured me that that wouldn't happen there. A week later they sent me my parts .................nasty gray crap. Would not recommend them to ANYBODY. I have been using Plymouth Plating for my clear cad for the last 4 or 5 years. There cad looks good for a long time. Be sure to call first and talk to the owner , Don Webb, tell him about how other platers that you have used, their cad turns gray and gets streaked from sitting around in the shop in prime conditions. He says he has some kind of oil to put on it to keep it from turning gray. A few platers told me that the gray was because it wasn't rinsed right. I think that had little to do with the color changing. I still say it's because the EPA won't let companies do the hexavalent cad or hex chrome any more. I told Don about how cadmium was supposaedly super toxic, if ya looked at it wrong, it would kill ya, bout like lead would (hee hee). He told me that he has been around cadmium for the vast majority of his 80 years of existance and says cadmium ain't done anything to him !!!!!

This is getting more interesting.

I had two good experiences with Aero Prop in the last three years -- one person has had a bad experience.

One person notes Billmark; one says they had a bad experience.

Same thing happened to me with Hearn plating in Toledo. A friend who's had about a dozen bike's hardware clear zinc plated recommended them -- I used them ONCE and the plating was the worst clear zinc I've ever seen. I sent them clean, degreased, bead blasted parts and got back junk; plus they lost several big items and charged me twice their quote.

Why is plating ALWAYS like this? I don't think I've ever seen two guys agree on a plater (save Brown's in KY, which is sadly now closed.)
