The O-ring chain I put on my 1962 promptly did some "in place" machining on the inside of the sprocket cover. That means if you drop the bike on the right side, its even easier to crack the cover in half. I went to non-O-ring chains (and a new cover) and just lube it regularly. One day I will try dropping the chain in a tub of 60 weight, I like that idea, soak the dang thing.

While I agree that O-ring chains are a godsend, I can't see letting them carve up the bike. Patrick's fix-- to use a smaller chain and cut-down sprocket is perfect for low-power bikes like a K. I would not want to do this on a Sportster, since I have enough trouble eating up front sprockets. I assume he cuts down the rear sprocket on the brake drum as well.

Obviously, Paul, they are both thinned down... ; - )

Glad to know I wasn't just dreaming on my own as implied earlier!!!

As for power, 520 and 530 have the same side links and the same roller diameter, so 520 is just thinner, not weaker than 530...

I use that 520 chain on my Sportsters as well, and the Bonneville bike...

Hi Folks, hope everybody is still looking!!!

Done the front wheel today, changed the brake linings plus a good clean...

Then hit the dumps... As I started doing all the tappets play, suddenly the engine stopped turning... Turns out the Eastern new springs (remember, one spiral more than std...) went coil bound before the max lift...So they're OK for K or KH but not for KK or KHK... New lesson learned, Tom : 0 ) ... So cylinders out again and swapped all the springs for the std ones... Struggled a bit with the "home made from cut down cam bush" 1/2 moon valve keys install tool so redid a proper sturdier one for next time...

Timed the magneto, fitted a few bits, lick of silver paint on heads and cylinder decks... Engine is all buttonned up now...

Just a lick of paint on fenders and tank and it's a runner...

Hi...

Couldn't resist another hour in the garage after work and the weekly trip to the shops...

Relocated oil filter, new bracket and oil lines all done...

Plus little reminder on the handlebars that sommat lies dormant in between rear cylinder and oil tank... Tom's not gonna like this I fear...

Exhaust pipes on...

No problems Tom, I apreciate your comments!

Shake it there mate...

As you'll know by now, this is the 55 KHK...

That's the other one, the 54 KHK around 2006, before I went Bonneville Salt Flats Fever mad... and really started messing with it:

Hi,

Winning line's sight...

Paint all there and mounted, but haven't wheeled the bike out yet for some decent daylight photos...

Image

Got what I though were 2 repro transfers with the bike deal... After 10mm in water and not the slightest bit of sliding action, I sort of guessed these must be old dried up OEM ones... Ended up scrapping away all the backing paper, then scrapping all the old glue.

New coat of varnish on the back, cut to size, stuck it on and got rid of front paper with an eraser... We'll see much later if it's been successful...

I'm at work now, just about to book 2 days holidays so I can finish it before the week end, there's an Ironhead meet in in a pub next Saturday...

Wish me luck!!!
