556 belly code is from 1956, so either a restamp or OEM replacement cases...

Stan - how do you explain that one cylinder base stud is three times the size of the others?

Patrick, thanks for pointing out that they are replacement cases or a restamp. That makes these cases a bad example in the quest for the "54 trap door appearance. Sorry, My Bad! Dave, I think Patrick is right. Perspective. Although it was some years ago I don't remember anything weird about that. Maybe because of the camera I was using, I was pretty close so the front stud just appeared to be much larger. Stan

I was just pulling your leg about the stud - but it looked really odd in the first photo.

Re: your Mavica - take a look at the first photo here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Mavica I'll bet yours didn't look anything like that. I think they made 50 of them. Pretty darn advanced for 1981!

Nope didn't look anything like it but sure wish I had one right now. Might be worth a good bit today. Yeah mine looks like the one underneath. Still got it. Maybe it will be worth a little tomorrow but I doubt it. Thanks on the Avatar.

I thought in light of some comments made in a recent thread I would resurrect this one from 2016. Below I have a Table I'm working on to try to zero in as best I can on when the trap door emerged. Any new data points anyone can provide of partial VIN and belly numbers would be appreciated and added to the Table. I am not surprised that a later numbered KHK VIN could be trapdoor-less where an earlier VIN KH might have a trap door. If they stamped the VINs on the way out the door and it took a while longer to make the KHK engine this might account for the anomaly.

Can't see a proper topic about KH trap door birth, so I revive this one...

Extracts from my copy of the Pohlman Files:

Corresponding shot, from old book, I can't remember which, probably an Evo Sportster one, these books are mostly useless to me, I just cut what I'm looking for in them:

This shot is the earliest I know of the trap door birth.

Might be some earlier ones, but as you see, descriptions by Pohlman employee are not very useful.

I would also point out the racing crowd was desparate for a trapdoor, as changing ratios in the field by splitting the cases wasn't too clinical...

KRs deffo got a trapdoor by 1954...
