Removing a stubborn pressed-in crank

Postby Simon » Mon Oct 22, 2018 9:10 pm

Hi everyone,

A friend is struggling with removing a stubborn pressed-in pin on his K model flywheels. Does anyone have any tips on how best to do this? Is there a tool for the job, or does one usually apply heat, etc?

Thanks,

Simon

If he ain't using a 12 ton press, it won't move. I disassemble/assemble press together cranks many times a year

He's using a press, but not sure what specification...I'll ask!

FIRST tap on it a bit after adding some super penetrating oil, just to work in. If no go, I would add heat to the flywheel. Avoid the pin, use a small rose bud or cutting head, oxy acetylene. Heat around the pin on the boss about half inch per second. With press pushing. Don't over heat. 220 degrees plenty. Water will steam as indicator. If it doesn't go the first time throw it in the freezer and go again with heat and pressure. Never had to heat/cool/heat anything more than twice, however twice is often the key. Erik

Thanks Erik - I also suggested some heat. Will check back with him and see how progress is.

I have little to no experience with flywheels. After reading this thread I decided to get out an extra set of K Model flywheels I have to take a look. So on the inside surface of both wheels there are three 7/16" drilled holes x 7/8" deep. They are slightly in different positions on the wheels when the wheels are together. I wondered if someone could enlighten me as to the purpose of these holes. Oil pickup or balance maybe?????

They were done to balance the wheels. Helps with vibrations. (Sometimes makes them worse)

The fine art of flywheel balancing. Weigh all parts that latch on to the crank, including circlips, etc, everything. Choose approximate rpm range desired, plug in to H-Ds specific balancing worksheet, make sure female rod is relieved for strokers, if not original KH rods or if building 5" stroker. Out pops magic numbers that you turn in to the actual Bob weight. Than get busy...drill baby drill. First big chunks than smaller. H-D states properly done should be 5 or less balance holes. Last 5" stroke 61.5" KHKR I built wanted some weight added to proceed...in that case drill in, tap the hole, fill with real lead. Go some more...when done the assembly should sit anywhere you turn it. Erik

Here is a view of the Female Rod K or XL on left And KH, KHK on right with relief for Male Rod which travels deeper in at BDC. Serious damage will result if this is not done. I used S&S Supreme Rods for the SuperK. Stock, they are clearanced only for XL stroke.
