Some racing shocks are designed to run inverted for less unsprung weight by mounting body towards frame. Either they are designed to run inverted, or our gas charged than youb can usually run either way. Erik

While I've been going over the bike I purchased I notice it has what this site called the elusive 62503-52A. In the technical section its says " It was found on the relatively unmolested 62 XLCH 2373 (production #373). It's been reported that 62 XLCH 2404 also has this tank.
It is believed that the -52A was a short-lived transition tank which appeared from very late 1961 to early 1962. Although the details are unknown, it is suspected that only a few hundreds of these tanks were produced.
This tank is very similar to -52, but the salient feature is the Feed outlet. The Feed outlet does NOT have the circular stamping around it - a potential weak point. The outlet is hexagonal instead of round, and is located closer to the bottom of the tank". If you zoom in on the picture below you can see the tanks lower hexagonal outlet.

Yep, that's the oddball 62503-52A tank. The -52A is shown in the 1962 Parts Catalog Supplement for XLCH. The -52B is shown in the 1963 Parts Catalog for XLCH. It's suspected that the -52A was only used during early 1962, but there are so few 1962 Sportsters out there, it's hard to tell. And some were undoubtedly sold as spare parts, so maybe that's how this bike got one.

It also has the special sprocket cover bolts like the krtt shows, for exhaust hangers. Has the special cylinder stud nuts (performance). What little I know. How about engine number and case numbers

I ran your numbers in Dave's guess-o-meter, http://www.harleykmodel.com/technical/n ... index.html, and it exceeded the production #'s for that year. However it show's it could be produced in 57? Post pics od the belly numbers, and someon e here is gonna help.

Belly #'s are 556-2173. Just looked in the technical section and the 556 example is just like mine, the middle number is very faint and the other two numbers are easy to read. Also, just like it says, the belly numbers are within a few hundred of the vin.

While I'm waiting for someone to chime in on the belly numbers I posted cus according to Dave's guess-o-meter for engine #'s it exceeded the production #'s for that year. Could it be produced in 57? SO, I am looking for a set of nice speedster handle bars for this bike. If anyone out there has a set they would part with I would like to purchase them. I missed a set that Erik had on ebay a few months ago. Thanks for any help.
