Let me be the first... KRTT engine what's it worth?

Postby User999 » Mon Jul 20, 2015 12:01 pm

Looking for input, info, or just plain ol derision for asking.
My computer illiterate biker friend has a 1955 HD 750 KRTT engine (1 of 14 produced) that he's been storing for for 40 years or so. He would like to start (and hopefully complete) the process of selling it but how does one come up with a reasonable asking price for such a rare item?
Ask a Forum.
I have some scanned photos from maybe the 70's (polaroids) but not the serial# (yet)
Looking for suggestions offers or as I said derision for asking... SOME kind of clue as to where the interest lies.
Thanks... I think.

All down to condition if it's on its own...

Lets also face the fact normal KRs and XLRs (meaning without much history) don't seem to sell at all on Ebay, either too much hope from sellers or lack of rich buyers...

Seen complete KRs sell around $12,000 which don't seem much considering what a proper K, KH or early XLH/CH will fetch there...

So engine alone, say a fork between 4,000 and 5,000??? (I recently missed a complete KHK engine at $3,000)

So, sell now in a depressed market or wait for better times that might never come again...

KRTT engine what's it worth?

There's a 1960 KR on eBay right now - item 301686751826 - it's at $14K BUT "Reserve Not Met" - follow it and see what it ultimately goes for - if it ever meets the reserve. Of course, that's a whole bike, not just an engine, but it's a data point.

The canadian KR on ebay is not too bad, just wrong forks and trees.

And just what I said above, some are willing to go above $12,000 but reserve is way too high so it won't sell...

thanks for the info guys.
I'll have some pics in a few days and we'll see where it goes.
I did find out he has the original frame... or at least the bottom half with the numbers, but he isn't so sure he wants to sell it. I suspect he'd get a better price including it. Any thoughts about that?

I'm not an expert, but I've had a few dealings with a guy who is,and the value of a true KR motor lies in the eye of the buyer.
You can't ride it on the street, due to it's basic race only design(1/2 speed oiling, ect.)so it needs to go to a true race fan.
Dale Walkster has a few K's,1 that I know is a true papered history race bike, and he would be my first choice as a buyer simply because I
know he has the resources to build the entire, correct KR bike from a bare bones motor, and also because he would make it run and ride.
It would also be on display for all to see,as he owns his Wheels Thru Time K/XLR/XR display in Maggie Valley. That's just me though.
If the owner is just looking to make bank on this piece of true American Motorcycle History, all I can say is he will be very offended
in the low dollar offers he'll get,as parts and the talent to build one of these gems are getting pretty hard to find. If he really cares
about our culture and the history of the motor,He'll at least give WTT a call and see what they'll work it out to,maybe he has another
old bike he needs things for that they can help him with,or he can list it on the AMCA site, ect. It would be a shame to sell it to an
overseas buyer who's just going to put it in a glass case and brag on it. Just my Humble Opinion. Mike

Hammie,

Due to its size, there surely are loads more hoarders in the States than in the rest of the world put together!!!

And also, thanks to Dave for putting on display such an array of original condition race bikes, but surely, he's got enough by now and should leave a few out there for others to enjoy? ; -)

Hi,

Good luck with that to your friend...

Engine is typical KR that has seen lots of races and not much maintenance, shows how long they can last!!!

It will probably be only worth sommat to someone with a KR already and looking for a few usable parts.

Probably the worse VIN alteration I've ever seen!!!
