Chain Length

Postby rufus » Tue Dec 10, 2019 1:30 pm

I have seen this question posted on the XL Forum. How many links on an IH Sportster Drive chain. All the answers seem to produce results for the longer frame models. What would be correct for the K model and early Sportster's. I am assuming more than 100 links would affect the brake control arm to the chain guard? Would 102+ be acceptable and any benefits / problem?

Hey Rufus I am running a 23 tooth sprockets on both bikes. Tired a diamond o-ring couldn’t get it to fit right. Couldn’t get the rear wheel center in the swing arm

The number of links will depend on the sprockets you use. You normally have to shorten a new chain to fit it.

O-ring chains are generally too wide to fit on early bikes.

Most common chains come in 110 link size, shorten accordingly. The cost for a 110 is the same as 102..
