HD KH model, valve seal question

Postby PeterB » Sat Dec 14, 2019 12:54 pm

Hello,
first short intotruction myself
I‘m now 60Years old and after some, my wife would say, crazy too much oldtimers and bikes I bought a KH by a HD dealer in Italy. Without viewing = trust = doesn’t work again. I should know that because 2 years ago I bought there a GTR Vespa from 1971, fully restaured.
Result : I restaured the Vespa again.....
Now to the KH
I was not looking to a show bike, only a good driver. This bike was owned by the HD shop owner last 5 years, but that says nothing.....
I start soft cleaning and improvements step by step.....
Now today I comes to the right side where are the valves sitting. Two seals was broken and the engine oily.
Can I replace the seals ( pictures ) when I take out the srew and after that new adjust the fit in guides IN and EX ?
And what are the correct inch or mm for the space ?
Thank‘s for help
By the way : still looking for a Horn for K KH
greetings
Peter

Welcome Peter,

To replace the valve cover gaskets you need to simply loosen the tappet adjusting screws and run them down far enough to be able to pass the new gasket between the valve stem and adjusting screw. Then drop them down over the valve guide threads. Readjust the tappets and you should be good to go.

The tappet adjusting picture I posted is out of the 1955 KH Riders Handbook.

Your pictures are a little small so it's hard to tell for sure but it kind of looks like the front intake valve guide block is cracked by the front screw? Maybe it's a piece of dirt or something but I would take a look at that.

Hello,
thank‘s
No crack, was rest of silicon pieces....
So the round robber seal should be easy, but what‘s about the paper seal between the taper guide and engine bloc ?
Seems to be that this can get complex ?

The gasket I thought you were referring to was the lower valve cover gasket. The Lower valve cover rubber O Ring and the tappet block gasket are more problematic. You will have to remove the cylinder to pull the lower valve cover off to replace the O Ring as well as removing the cylinder to replace the paper gasket between the valve guide block and the motor case.

Peter, With the Tappet Blocks try snugging up, clean off and with nice thick clean oil like 50, 60, 70 straight weight they may stop seeping. Erik
