56 KHK Gas Tank

Postby Promod117 » Mon Jan 13, 2020 3:49 pm

Hello!
Recently picked up a 56 KHK basket. It has been apart for 25 years but is 99% there. Not sure where the few missing parts went. Buried in boxes that I couldn't find. Although this wasn't the original owner, he did buy it in 1962, possibly from his brother

I will undoubtedly have many questions as these were a rarity, at least in NE Ohio.

My first pertains to the paint, specifically the gas tank. I have a photo from 1962 that shows a stripe around the Flash. I have not seen another like that however there was discussion in an older topic. He also had the tank repainted and the Flash placement is not correct.

1. Does anyone have or willing to send me a template of the gas tank Flash lay out?
2. Can anyone confirm that the stripe around the Flash is correct?
3. If it is correct, what is the width of the stripe?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

There was no pin striping involved. The paint was a simple 2-tone - blaze painted atop the base color. You can feel the height mismatch between the base and blaze on OEM paint.

Welcome Promod117 to the site.

For your reference, this is a picture of my original paint 1956 KHK gas tank. As you can see definitely no pin stripping.
Are your plans to restore it back to original? If so, I hope your 99% are original parts for that year. I understand it can get kind of hairy
out there doing a full on restoration these days.

Good Luck,

Fellow Ohioan

Stan

Hi Stan!
Thanks for the closeup! My hopes are to have it pretty darn close! Everything I am seeing is correct. This site has a wealth of great information to help with that! The previous owner took it apart to redo it and never got around to putting it back together. I unwrapped parts that were plated by CCP with 1996 newspaper so it's been setting a long time. Unfortunately for me, he had many pieces chromed or cad plated that weren't suppose to be. This was one of two that I can remember in the Massillon area.

Thanks, again!

Nice tank Stan. I will post some of my late 56 K Tank with the Sportster rocker box reliefs. The Pattern I have is courtesy of our member Dave Swanson with the fine Black 56KHK in the Gallery. We met after I first posted the history in 90s. 2000s We identified his parts pile and years later he completed it. Amazing job. I am running off some copies of Tank Panel if anyone needs one just let me know and I can send out. Erik
