Rear Brake Light Switch Components

Postby wz507 » Mon Feb 24, 2020 11:44 pm

I am curious about a couple parts listed in the 1955-1965 spares book, more specifically items #8 and #14 in the image below. I don’t understand what purpose they serve since the switch body is already electrically protected against a possible short by the fiber disk #34 (wires attach atop disk #34). So what purpose would the size #10 fiber washer (item #8) serve? Normally if the parts book calls for a couple parts the description ends in a (2), but in this case items #8 and #14 seem to be single items. Could they be the internal parts shown in the last image? Seems stange that they would call out the size as a #10 x 13/32 x 1/32" fiber washer if it was an internal switch part. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Harley had it right in the 1953 Spare Parts Catalog. But they started screwing up in 1954 - the STOP-light switch is in the section entitled SPOT-LIGHT SWITCH

In subsequent spare parts catalogs, the 72004-52 is sometimes called STOP-light switch, and sometimes SPOT-light switch. Browsing through all the catalogs is left as an exercise for the reader.
