What are These?

Postby JerrryR » Tue Mar 17, 2020 3:00 pm

Hi All,
These are pictures of some parts that just sold on eBay. I have an identical set, what are they? They are not the "Spark Coil Upper and Lower Studs". Those studs are about 4 & 1/8" and 4 & 1/4".
Thanks,
JerryR

Hi Erik,

Could be, but I thought that special bracket welded on the right of the KR frame was just meant for the front exhaust pipe?

These studs feel a bit flimsy for a flat tracker!!!

Hi Patrick, I don't know for sure, the fellow at H-D museum is building a KR and I noticed these photos. May be his invention? ;)

No Erik, you're on the right path, see portion of OEM Pohlmann KR photo I just added...

I'm just saying it looks a bit flimsy since racers would push on that peg to stand up the bike after a turn sideways...

(one can counter-steer with either or both handlebars and foot pegs)

Hi Erik and Patrick,
I'm not a racer and can add nothing to your conversation about race issues. My only comment is I don't think these bolts are home made. The set I have are exactly like the two that sold on eBay. I think they must be factory parts?

Hi fellows, I see the photo now. They may be a factory part for some other model, that they simply trimmed to modify for this application. Many Harley fasteners were spun up or home made looking. Like 52K rear axle. Round stock, cut, threaded, with a nut welded on the end. Seems I have one of those in my piles too! Unmachined. Looks like the one Bill at H-D shows is turned right at the slightly machined spot. He made it from tool box stud, but said he had a KR sample to copy. Probably, working in the museum! He said the part appeared to be turned down "extra" to fully fit frame tab.

Hi Jerry, Erik,

Nobody said your studs are home made!

Here's what the early 1954 KR part books says (the bracket on the frame did not last that long...)

Image

There's deffo some studs, but no dimms given... Both sides use the same studs, but the alloy brackets are different, right is square, left is triangular,

Jerry, can you check your threads to see if they match the nuts and bolts listed?
