Seat

Is there any know differences in seats (just the saddle) between a 55 & 56? Also, any particular spots that need protection when sandblasting a frame?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike. The -54 # seat is the same from 54 to at least 60. You may want to plug the brake crossover tube to protect bushings. That is my only thought on the frame. We have determined that the color should be an 80% Gloss Black. Erik K

Thanks, Erik. There are a couple of high-priced seats on eBay right now but subtle differences from my 56 seat. Maybe earlier and later versions.

My 54 KHK came to me with the std KH seat pan, but fitted with thin rubber and naughahide cover... All Ks are leather for sure...

Early Sportsters' ones are leather covered...

Who knows when the changeover occured?

I believe Naughahide to be right for KH when you look at period photos...

I can't see any OEM solo early seats at the moment on the Bay, can you post some links to check?

Frame sand blasting: Plug all the holes, steering holes, all the threads, all machined surfaces like where the rear mount seats on, 2 faces where the rear swing arm bolt goes through and so on and on... And you'll still get some blasting media in there somewhere somehow...... Use think self adhesive aluminum tape to cover flat machined surfaces, several layers and trim with scalpel/sharp knife...

Here you go, Patrick...

These are real close to my 56 seat but the ribs and vent hole spacing is a tad different. My 56 has a bit of a narrower front as well.

Looks like very pricey old seats. Need to measure the T bolt width, these look like the wide pattern 1952. Erik K

As Erik says, they are both K seats, not KH seats:

The KH pan is much flatter...

I think that the factory -54 seat was simulated leather as Patrick indicates. The buddy seats are the same stuff which Harley describes a plastic (vinyl-like) covering in their adds. I have been told that the 57 Sportster also had the plastic covered solo and buddy seats. Don't know beyond that whether they went back to leather in later years.

I do have a 54 type seat that's OEM and leather, so they do exist!
