K and XL Cam Covers

Hi All,
I need some schooling if you don't mind teaching today. An acquaintance of mind asked me what is different about the -52K cam cover from the -52A XL cam cover other than the obvious visual difference on the underside. In other words why won't the K cam cover work/fit on an XL and can they be machined to fit an XL. If they can what machining is necessary?
Thanks,
JerryR

Yes, the big cam bushing sits higher in the case. The case casting is taller in other words. If you machine the shoulder down the bushing will fit lower in the case giving the extra clearance needed to clear the wider XL cam. Just make sure any oiling holes line up.

Hi Jerry,

The other difference is the machining and bush for the shaft of the generator idler gear.

The shaft is fixed on the K, bush is in the gear, so it don't need the bushes on both sides

But it rotates with the gear on the Sportster and it needs 2 x bushes.
