That pad has been milled and restamped in my opinion. Looks milled, than bolt hole pad lowered to look more stock. Erik K

Yes Erik I thought that too. I haven't taken these images, they have been sent to me so I haven't eyeballed these cases close up. Also does the casting around the main bearing look larger? Cheers Hayley.

Again something not quite original here. The R is an early pre 1952 style stamp. *?*

If these were "handbuilt" low production maybe they used old dealer stamp sets? I really don't know. Just noticed the early font style of the R.

The first case definitely has a boss and race made for the ball bearings.

Erik - if you have a look at the engine pad in Gene Payne's scooter on this site- it looks the same at the pad on my earlier pic - looks milled flat then milled deeper at the nut leaving a funny little cast ridge. What do you think? - Hayley

I see that. Perhaps they prepped the cases that way, I have no idea...can check out other XLR cases I suppose. Gene's does have the era correct stamps.

And yet the year 61 on his does not seem to have been stamped as a set...

Either way, they're all rare sets of cases! Many of the racers have re-stamps - whether done by the racer themselves, or a dealer.
I personally wish I had have bought the set of cases he had at Wauseon some years back, stamped with a 57 VIN, and modified to take a generator. With Dytch cylinders mounted, if I recall...
That would make a sweet sleeper if done up like the early XL!
