Real quick----flashing the coils on an xlch---- + lead to A terminal on generator?

Sparking battery + to the A (armature) terminal of the generator usually works. To be sure, jump the F terminal to ground when you do it. It only takes a moment, don't think it gets "better" by keeping it there for more that a quarter of a second.

Have you replaced the armature? Otherwise generators usually keep their polarization and don't need to be flashed.
