intake clamps

Postby K Daddy » Thu Dec 13, 2018 3:21 pm

I am struggling to remove the intake manifold on my '53 K model.
I have worked hard on loosening the manifold clamps but they won't budge.
Next step is acetylene with small rosebud tip to heat and expand the clamp.
I restrained myself to see if others had some ideas I could try that are less drastic.
I really hate to damage them and throw them out. I have learned it is pretty costly to replace damaged parts on this bike.
Thanks in advance

Tap on nut with lead or brass hammer all around might break free. Make shore you are going counter clock wise as looking at them. Before that I would soak them with lock free oil over night might work ? Don't be afraid to put some mustard on it to break free the nuts with a long wrench with leverage. My opinion.

Give both nuts a generous dousing of 'Kroil' - leave for a couple of hours and repeat. Yes - tap with a copper or nylon tipped hammer. This method works every time. I've been able to remove plenty of W series and a couple of Panhead manifold nuts that have been seriously crusty and seized without damage or using heat. Cheers Hayley.

Great advice. I got the manifold off without breaking anything. It took some pretty good whacks, but they finally loosened.
Thanks
