We are doing so good on headlight eyebrow brackets, I decided to take on footpegs. Like most things, once you guys fire me up, its not so complicated. A search through the parts books gives:
Oct 15 1952; Feb 1 1956; Sept 1 1958; Nov 15 1962
50951-52 left (Casting # 50950-52)
50956-52 right (Casting# 50955-52)
July 1964
50951-52A left
50956-52A right
1961-1967
50951-52A left 54 to 1966, XLCH 67-69
50948-67 left XLH 67-70, 70 XLCH
50948-71 left XLH XLCH 71-*
50956-52A right 54 to 1966, XLCH 67-69
50949-67 right XLH 67-*, 70-* XLCH

50948-67 left XLH 67-69. 70 XLCH
50948-71 left XLH XLCH 71-76
50948-75 left XLH XLCH 77-*
50956-52A right 54 to 66, XLCH 67-69
50949-67 right XLH 67-74, 70-76 XLCH (76 is typo, should be 74)
50957-75 right 75-76 all (goofy cable brake setup)
50949-75 right XLH XLCH 77-*
1979-1985
50948-75 left XLH XLCH 79-*
50949-75 right XLH XLCH 79
Re-arranging the terms, as they said in algebra class:
Left peg
50951-52 1952-62?
50951-52A 63? to 66, XLCH 67-69
50948-67 XLH 67-70, 70 XLCH
50948-71 71-76 XLH XLCH
50948-75 77-at least 85 XLH XLCH (engine mount)
Right peg
50956-52 1952-62?
50956-52A 63? to 66, XLCH 67-69
50949-67 67-74 XLH, 70-74 XLCH
50957-75 75-76 all (goofy cable brake setup)
50949-75 77-79 XLH XLCH (engine mount, 80 and later part of brake)
So questions raised are:
1) what happened between 1962 and 1964? It could be as simple as a finish change. All the early ones look like black paint to me.
2) What's the difference between the -67 left and the -71 left?
To me it looks like there are two "regular" sets. Straight for K-models and Sportsters with non-electric cases. An offset set for electric start cases early, but the two different left ones, as noted. And then we go goofy, with the integrated brake cable setup in 75 and 76, and finally, the engine-mounted pegs in 77 up.
Here is my collection, some of which is going on eBay tomorrow:
The left peg with the rubber came off the 1954 K roller I bought, and I am pretty confident it is correct for 1954. The chromed set is pretty snazzy for the chopper guys. The right one below the chrome set looks bashed and bent, but has the same casting number as the others. The one offset left looks to have a 50948 part tag but (of course) the dash number is torn off, so I can't say its a -67 or a -71.
Below the honest manly pegs that attach to the frame are the 77 case-mounted pets, with a weird one on the right that might be an aftermarket version.
Over at XLForum no less than Dr Dick says there are only two pre-77 types, based on long frame vs short frame. I assume that is the same as angled seat post tubes versus vertical ones. Thing is-- the frame is determined by the engine-- if its a "hump" electric start case vs a non-hump kick start engine. So it is based on the engine if you ask me. And its not even the model, since in 1970, they used the electric start case in XLCH models and just plugged the starter pocket hole. Not sure what frame that was, too lazy to look.
So any help with those two questions above let me know, its hard to see what the changed. Oh, one fun fact-- the early pegs look like cast steel, the 67-76 offset pegs look forged steel. In addition to clearing out some pegs, I will be listing a cherry unused center-stand with the mounting kit.
