Swingarm set up

Postby DaveAus » Tue Jan 25, 2022 8:02 pm

I’ve change the bearings in my K model to timken bearings and I’ve been looking for a thread on a step by step instructions once the swingarm is in the frame.

At the moment it’s in there but everything is loose.

Thanks
Dave

The instruction below is from an early HD XL service manual (1959-1966). The bearing tensioning mentioned (measured with a spring scale) should be accomplished with no more than 15-20 ft-lb force. Don't overtighten the swing arm as it will cause the rear section, where axle passes through, to pinch and become too narrow.

Normal preload on just about any Timken Bearing is 1 foot pound. It appears the H/D manual says 1-2, foot pounds. Maybe you mean inch pounds? Over tightening squares the rollers.
