How long had your KHK been in storage?
What were the storage conditions? For example was it in a high humidity area?

This may be totally out there in left field, but for what it's worth, I had a KK motor that was locked up when I got it. Turned out to be the oil pump gears. Is there any way water could have gotten in there over winter?

Does the gear lever "flop" or are the pawl carrier springs returning it to the mid level position ?

My thinking here is the gear lever has taken a "hit" while in storage and the ball end has jumped out of the socket on the carrier or, broken off.

Gears might now be halfway through a shift, not in neutral.
