56 KHK Speedo/Ign Switch Mount Hardware

Postby Promod117 » Fri Jan 12, 2024 10:28 pm

Okay, next question.......

I can not find part numbers or illustration for the correct nut and lock washer for the speedometer bracket stud that mounts to the upper triple tree and also clamps the ignition/light switches.

All the parts manuals I've looked at indicate all years use 4 2748B round head 1/4-28 screws.

One picture I saw appeared to be brass lock washer and cad nut. No idea if that was original. I would like to find the correct parts.

As always, any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Try Old Dude Vintage, they have a lot of the old original equipment hardware. Have an on line site.

Thanks John.

I am familiar with the site. What I am looking for is part numbers. I likely have the hardware. Just want to make sure I'm using the correct pieces.

2748B is correct. It’s a one piece parkerized washer and screw unit. You only need two when using the 67200-54 bracket. The two bracket studs use a cad 7682 flexloc nut.The flexloc nuts were the nylock type, at least the ones on the brackets I have are.

I stand corrected, the earlier version of 7682 had fiber insert, later is nylock

Mind sharing what parts book and which page you found this? I've scoured a few and couldn't find anything. Of course, sometimes you can't see what's in front of you!

It is only listed under “nuts” page 62 in the 56 K parts catalogue (web version of this site) not illustrated in the parts books that I have. Check your extra parts, it’s a small version of the 7993 used on the shock studs, the early version of which also had a fiber insert and later version nylock.

Attached is an image of the bracket stud fasteners on my unrestored '57 XL, and also a spare speedo with bracket. Both have the same stud fasteners, a 7675 nut
(1/4-28 x 3/16" x 7/16") and a 7035 split lock washer (1/4" x 1/2" x 1/16"). All the small screws, nuts and lock washers as shown in the parts books are correct and
in place. A running change in late '56 or early '57? Opinions welcomed.

I looked through the whole 56 parts book. Although the 7682 is listed in the back numerical index, I can find no instances where it is used in any application in the parts book. (doesn't mean it wasn't) I also noticed it was omitted from later years.

On a side note, I do not have any 1/4-28 flex nuts in any of my parts.....

Here is a picture of the nylock nut on the speedometer bracket on my OP '56 KHK. Doesn't look like it's ever had a wrench on it so highly likely it's the original one. As fiftysevenXL points out, they must have went to the 7675 nut with split lock washer in 1957.
