KRTT front hub

Postby wb56 » Wed Jun 27, 2018 9:34 am

I have a KRTT front hub with the part #43614 54R inside the hub. I have recently seen what appears to be a KRTT front hub with no part # inside. Looks identical to the one I have. Does anyone out there know if Harley ever made a KRTT hub with no part #? Thanks for any info.

The number is on the inside wed, same as yours. I would attach a pic but says the file is too big and don't know how to change. I bought the hub without the backing plate and I'm using a k model plate that has # on inside. I believe the KRTT hub used a wider brake shoe but the plates are the same as a k model. Some plates I've seen have air duct but I don't know if they were added or made that way. Hope others chim in with more info.

Hi,

In all my years of looking for an -54R front back plate, I have never seen one in the flesh or in photos...

I believe the std K or KH one was used and fitted with wider specific cam and pivot to suit big twin wider shoes.

This is the assembly mounted on my XLRTT, post 65 front brake mounted reverse at the back:

But obviously fitted with the rear -54R backplate which did exist...

The KRTT conical casting resemble the Norton Manx one, this might be what you saw recently, wb56...

No,

Parts Book for the -54R conical brake lists the shoes and linings/rivets as -38 (so big twin) and all the rest, cam, pivot etc are listed as -54R

The complete back plate is listed as -54R because of above parts, no naked back plate listed so it's a K, KH or XL depending on year of KR.

(A note on the front of the R parts books always says "if it's not listed here, it's a std part, look in relevant street parts book".)

The rear back plate is listed naked as -54R (that's what you see above on my rear wheel), but remember that the drum is then the cast iron finned race one, also a -54R part. The conical front applied at the back appears circa 1965.

Thanks for the info Patrick. It's a real treat to hear what others know about this topic. I agree that the backing plates I've seen with air ducts are most probably modified k model plates, but without seeing the back for a part # it's hard to tell. I'm using the standard brake shoes and parts on my KRTT hub and hope it works. This is because I haven't been able to find the parts Patrick listed. Are those parts available? Also, I have only seen one KRTT hub used for a rear brake other then yours Patrick. Very rare I would think.

Here we go, from 1959 parts book:

From mid 60's 6 pages leaflet (plenty of machining on the hub and making a sprocket holder...):

My rear wheel assembly, three ball bearings (2 on the hub, 1 on the spacer), ex Roger Reimann 1965/1971, ex Scott Guthrie 1971/2005 (Scott has 300+ records on the Bonneville Salt Flats as a rider, owner, manager or sponsor, he started in 1971 on a Sportster with this back wheel he bought of Roger from his then obsolete 1966 Daytona KRTT...) Uses 520 chain, not 530...
