Linkert M53 Choke Shaft Question

Postby RickD » Sun Aug 15, 2021 3:16 am

Hi All,
I’m running a 53KRM with an M53 which has the one-piece choke shaft. It works fine but would like to add the correct shaft. I realise they are unobtainium but if anyone has a lead on one it will be appreciated.
Alternatively is there anything off another Linkert that might substitute or adapt?
I bought the KRM locally here in Victoria Australia a few years ago and have been having some fun with it since. It seems to have most of its correct bits. Initially it was in a 56 frame but is now in a 53 frame courtesy of Jerry Raino, many thanks Jerry.

Hello Rick I will keep my eyes open for the two piece M53 choke lever. I don't believe there is any substitute for you. It is the only Linkert carb it was used on, and the only model of Harley it was used on. David

RickD,

I am new to this forum and this is actually my first post here. I joined this forum as my friend has a 54 KHK and has a Parkinson's related disease and is no longer able to stand or work on his bike. So I am trying to help put his bike back together as time permits. I will have some questions as well to ask related to the intake nipple threads which are leaking badly. I am also a member at the Panhead-Flathead Forum as well. There is a lot of valuable information on that site as well to explore. To get back to this subject, check with Tom Cotten over at Liberty Specialties. Tom has rebuilt both of my M74's. Tom may have the choke shaft. He is an expert rebuilding Linkert's. He also makes his own "Durable Floats" which are made from genuine Nitrophyl M, not like a similar brand float which swell from all the additives in gasoline.

Good Luck!

Hi David and Mark,

Many thanks for your replies. I’m aware of Mr Cotten from lurking the various forums including this, and his Linkert knowledge. Thanks for the tip and I’ll see if I can contact him.
Mark it sounds like a great thing you are doing for your friend and if there’s anything we can do shout out here.

I found a few ebay pictures of an M53 with choke in various positions that might be helpful. First is a parts layout, with the brass shaft and steel handle at the top right. Its the shaft I need. A couple of others of assembled carb.

Don't mean to get off subject but could provide a pic of the horse shoe oil tank on your 53 KRM. I'm wondering if its like the one on the technical page with the 1" separation between the supply and vent. Also, did you find the part you were looking for? Thanks

Hi, the KRM oil tank should have the vent and feed on the RHS of the tank when seated on the bike, ie two fittings on either side of the tank mount. This is the same as the 52-53 KR oil tank as far as I know.

Here's a couple pics of the oil tank. No idea if it's the correct one, it looks like an XLCH tank. Going by the 53 KRM Spec Sheet the tank return and breather entries look more central than being on the left as this one is. That agrees with Simon's advice.
