Dave Hennessey's 1954 KH

This Forum is for members to describe the restoration process they used in building their bike - in a series of postings describing each step from acquisition through road-worthy.

This is NOT a general discussion forum. Sit back and learn the techniques - and mistakes - that another member has gone through.

This is just an example "Build" to get the ball rolling...

I bought this rather rough 1954 KH from a former co-worker in 2014. The bike had been wrecked by the first owner, and resurrected by the local Harley dealer by grafting-in the frame, front end, and many, many other parts from a wrecked 1952 or 1953 K. Then Forrest's friend, a semi-pro racer, donated many KR racing parts to make the bike a little faster. These included the KR oil tank, KR #7 heads, KR double valve springs, and as I found out much later, KR valves.

Some additional parts came in boxes and baskets - the original headlight, fork tins, a KH gas tank with a broken mounting tab, a Sportster "turtle tank" which didn't fit on the frame, an original exhaust system, and many other pieces and parts.

It took a couple of months to fix the original K gas tank - it was badly rusted inside, and the nameplate mounting strips had been removed from the outside. I mounted the original horse-hide buddy seat, and generally just applied TLC and got it running.

Five years later, Phase I was done. It's assembled, running, and aside from the spray-can paint job, just about finished. This took a lot of work, which I'm not going to describe in this example. The bike was judged at OSKRG-East (Oley swap meet) in April 2019, and garnered a Junior First award.

OK - now it's time to describe your build. And I hope you do a better job than I did!
